How to Make Your Own Pocket Fold Envelope

A pocket fold envelope is often used for formal invitations, such as wedding or baby shower invitations, or for homemade cards. Regardless of the reason for using the pocket fold envelope, making the basic envelope is a simple process. Once completed, designs or adjusting for appearances can make the envelope interesting and eye catching.

1. Lay out the cardstock. If the cardstock is not already measured out, measure according to a 4 ½ inch by 12 inch measurement, and then cut the larger cardstock to the appropriate measurements.

2. Measure increments in the cardstock. Start from the far side and measure 4 ½ inches from the side. Mark the measurement with a pencil mark. From the 4 ½ inch mark, measure another 5 ½ inches to the opposite side. Mark this spot with a pencil. The last measurement should measure 2 inches. If it does not, check the other measurements again and adjust as necessary.

3. Fold the cardstock at the penciled in measurements. Make two folds so that the cardstock has three separate areas. One area is 4 ½ inches, one is 5 ½ inches and the last is 2 inches.

4.Use an adhesive on the two-inch side. There are two options available: a glue stick or double sided tape. Run the glue stick along the edge of the two-inch side, or attach the tape along the edge.

5. Press the two-inch edge down into the 5 ½ inch side so that it sticks down. Allow the adhesive to dry. Stick the other side into the pocket formed of the two inch fold to close the envelope.
